Our impact

Giving Green started in response to fill a critical gap in climate philanthropy.

 

Our founder, Dr. Dan Stein, had spent more than 15 years devising evidence-based strategies in global impact and philanthropy. Along the way, he noticed something striking: many people were eager to invest significant funds into fighting climate change, but they felt lost about where to begin.

The sheer size and complexity of the space often left potential donors overwhelmed, preventing valuable resources from reaching initiatives that could truly make a difference.

​

What the climate giving space needed was a trusted source to cut through the noise, evaluate solutions with the greatest potential to make a real difference, and share the findings with the public.

​

In 2019, with the support of IDinsight, Giving Green’s fiscal sponsor, Dr. Stein turned his vision into a reality. What began as a small side project quickly grew to become Giving Green—a team of researchers and communicators influencing tens of millions of dollars in donations to a portfolio of highly effective climate initiatives.

But "our impact" is not just ours. Behind the numbers are climate donors and partners from all walks of life:

• Youth who raised money through craft sales.

• Parents and grandparents who wrote checks in their children’s and grandchildren’s names.

• Artists who donated proceeds from their work.

• Employees who made regular donations from their paychecks.

• Thoughtful donors who asked tough questions about our research process to make sure their gifts would lead to impact.

• No-questions-asked donors.

• Anonymous donors.

• And donations that we have yet to hear about.
